The Union Pearson Express is a direct rail link between Toronto Pearson International Airport and Toronto's downtown Union Station. The project involved building a 3km, elevated rail spur from an existing commuter line to a new station at the airport. In many ways, this is very similar to the CrossRail Chicago proposal to connect Metra's existing line to a station under O'Hare.

Metrolinx, the planning agency in Toronto, ordered high-performance diesel trains that have the ability to convert to electric power - which they will do once the entire corridor is electrified. Similar equipment could be used in Chicago to provide top-of-the-line service immediately and leave flexibility for electrification in the future.
