Caltrain, which connects San Francisco with San Jose and many communities in Silicon Valley, is being electrified as a part of the state's high-speed rail project. Future high-speed trains coming from Los Angeles will use the corridor to access San Francisco. By 2019, CalTrain will switch from diesel locomotives to EMU's along the entirely electrified route. Project planners expect that the new EMU trains, which can stop and start quickly, will improve performance and increase ridership. Ridership increases, as well as reduced fuel costs, will reduce the line's operating subsidies. The project will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality. The Caltrain electrification project is a good example of an improved corridor benefiting different types of train service.
